Character profile

Dara is the Executive director of the [currently unnamed] Foundation. A very kindhearted and upbeat woman who aims to help those previously associated with Evil teams by getting them back up on their feet. The player encounters Dara several times throughout the course of the game, typically after significant events or gym battles. She plays the role of a mentor of sorts, giving the player items such as Pokeballs, Potions, and Pokemart vouchers, as well as guidance and praise for your skill. She takes a very keen interest in the player, telling them how she tries to keep an eye on new trainers taking on the Gym Challenge, even offering the player housing if they so need it. She has very blunt but polite speech mannerisms, often seeming quite tense and stiff in her stance. She sometimes comes across as awkward in one-on-one conversations, a stark contrast to her confident and valiant attitude that she exhibits while speaking to an audience. Later in the game her demeanor comes across as much more standoffish and exhausted, though she continues to aid the player regardless.

Despite her kind and put-together demeanor, the player uncovers a dark secret. Using the resources of the Foundation and with the aid of her second-in-command, Mary, she aims to create a being completely immune to sickness and disease. At the time of discovering this information, her scheme hasn’t gone far, in fact the only person that seems to have been directly harmed by her experiments is herself, as she refuses to use any person or Pokemon besides herself as a test subject.

This desire of hers seems to stem from the loss of her first daughter, who passed away at a very young age from an unnamed disease. Her death still seems to affect Dara greatly, and she becomes very quiet when the topic arises. She does have another child however, Gem, who she speaks very fondly of and adores more than anything, despite his running away in the pre-game story. She also develops a sort of motherly attachment to your rival, Ivy, near the end of the main story.

Pokémon Luck and Misfortune

Background and pre-game

Dara first appears in Pokemon Luck and Misfortune on a TV broadcast the player can come across by chance. Before meeting her in person, multiple characters make mention of her as the director of the [unnamed] Foundation. Dara had started work on said foundation some time after leaving Team Rocket, where she worked as a grunt for a short while, being desperate for money. After leaving she vowed to make a change for the people who had been in a similar situation as her, starting work on her foundation, deeming it “A light in the dark” for those previously employed by Evil Organizations. She’s very passionate about her work and does everything she can to help people get a second chance.

Several months before the events of the game, Dara’s son, Gem, ran away from home to pursue his dream of becoming a Pokemon Ranger. While upset by this, Dara lets him go willingly, respecting his wishes to be left alone. She’s known to be an attentive and loving mother, and it’s implied that her son ran away not because he himself was being hurt, but because he couldn’t bear to see his mother hurt herself with her experiments anymore.

First encounter

The player first meets Dara directly outside of the [unnamed 2nd] Gym in [unnamed] City. She approaches them, asking about their battle before quickly remembering to introduce herself. She then asks if they know about the [unnamed] Foundation, answering yes will prompt praise from her, while answering no will prompt her to give the player a short rundown of what it is. She then gives the player 3 Pokemart Vouchers, which function like gift cards worth 500PC for the Pokemart. If the player has >500PC she will gift an additional 2 Vouchers. Dara then asks if they have a place to stay, and is relieved to hear that they do, but goes quiet after hearing that they are staying at a Ranger base. She brushes it off and bids the player farewell, saying that she’ll keep an eye out for them.

Post game

After completing the main story (Defeating the Pokemon League) Dara can be found at multiple points in the post-game story. Directly after she can be found in the hospital in [unnamed] City, alongside Gem’s Happiny, where you can speak with her about a few different topics. When asked about the Bethus Beast project she admits that she not only wasn’t behind it, but has never heard of such a thing. Asking about Gem, she will speak of him fondly, saying how proud she is of him & who he’s shaping out to be; After talking for a bit about him, she stops and apologizes for speaking for so long. Asking about Mary will cause her to become quite and visibly nervous, which she then softly explains that she hasn’t seen her in awhile, and quickly changes the subject.

After the post-game battle with Mary, Dara and Gem both meet the player at the professor's lab, telling them how worried they were for them. Dara seems especially shaken, repeatedly asking if they’ve been hurt. She eventually calms down and expresses resentment towards Mary for tricking the player, as well as guilt for not realizing what she had been up to. After things settle she exchanges a few words with the professor before the cutscene ends.

The final place dara can be found is either at her own home in [unnamed] City or the Professor's lab in [unnamed] village, with Professor Yew; they will often be found together. Finding the two of them at the Lab at the same time after completing the pokedex will prompt Yew to gift the player the Shiny charm.
